Exploring a Virtual Violin! A Journey to Discover How a Violin is Made.

The Didactic Violin

Has anyone ever wondered how a violin is made and what elements compose it?

“The Didactic Violin” is a project I “embarked on” several years ago.

Born from my passion for 3D modeling, this “exploded view” in “Ikea” style is the virtual representation of a violin, created with meticulous care. It is a unique model of its kind as it shows all the components (including internal ones) with extreme precision. I have tried to respect the proportions, measurements, and textures to give a touch of realism. The video below is a first introductory work. It describes all the components of the instrument.

Violino Esploso

Luthiery is an art unknown to many.

I often find myself involved in cultural events where I am asked to share and show the secrets of violin making. One certainty is the wonder of the people who are faced with a fascinating craft, with techniques and processes that seem to exist outside of time. Almost incredulous, the spectators ask me questions and are surprised by how much work goes into the creation of a musical instrument.

We can generally say how easy it is to see the outer shell of things. In reality, only by admiring the structure (the “skeleton”) can one appreciate the true value and the true essence of these marvelous artifacts.

After all, the same goes for any other object, equipment, or machinery: only after having “dismembered” it is it possible to understand the mechanics and physics that govern its operation.

Here I propose a faster method, without having to “dismantle” any instrument to discover its secrets.
